Minapharm Pharmaceuticals acquires 95% of the share capital of ProBioGen

ProBioGen AG announced today that Minapharm Pharmaceuticals, Cairo, has completed the acquisition of 95 % of the share capital of ProBioGen, an internationally renowned German cell line development and contract manufacturing specialist. The total purchase price of EUR 30.4 million includes earn-out payments which are conditional upon the achievement of defined milestones.

ACT's hESC line MA135 approved for federal funding

Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. announced today that human embryonic stem cell line MA135 was unanimously approved for federal funding at the 100th Meeting of the Advisory Committee to the Director National Institutes of Health. In addition to MA135, seven additional stem cell lines derived at ACT are currently under review by the NIH.

FDA approves City of Hope's neural stem cell-based therapy study for recurrent high-grade gliomas

City of Hope researchers received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct the first-in-human study of a neural stem cell-based therapy targeting recurrent high-grade gliomas, the most aggressive type of brain tumor. Karen S. Aboody, M.D., associate professor in City of Hope's Department of Neurosciences, leads the research team that developed this treatment strategy. Jana Portnow, M.D., assistant professor and assistant director of the Brain Tumor Program at City of Hope, is the principal investigator for the clinical trial.

The liver scarring of α1-antitrypsin deficiency, the most common genetic cause for which children undergo liver transplantation, might be reversed or prevented with a medication that has long been used to treat seizures, according to findings from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine that will published in Science and are available online today through the Science Express website.

ENMD-2076 demonstrates antitumor activity against murine xenograft models of CRC: Study

EntreMed, Inc., today announced the publication of preclinical results for its clinical-stage Aurora A/angiogenic kinase inhibitor, ENMD-2076, in human colorectal cancer xenograft models. The results of the study, conducted by EntreMed collaborators at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, were published in the June 1, 2010 issue of Clinical Cancer Research (Vol. 16, Issue 11).

Mannitol improves effectiveness of HUCBs in neonatal rat models of cerebral palsy

The sugar-alcohol compound mannitol improved the therapeutic effectiveness of human umbilical cord blood cells injected into neonatal rat models of cerebral palsy, reports a new international study led by the University of South Florida. The mannitol opened the blood-brain barrier by temporarily shrinking the tight endothelial cells that make up the barrier.

Results of BioSante's 2A/Furin technology in industrial antibody CHO expression system announced

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that results of an evaluation of its 2A/Furin technology by Novartis Pharma AG in its industrial antibody CHO expression system were published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology & Biotechnology. The results demonstrate that the 2A/Furin technology was integrated successfully into a plasmid-based, industrial-scale, CHO antibody cell line development process, with minimal optimization required.

Hepatocellular carcinoma responds poorly to chemotherapy owing to MDR. Recent studies have shown the tumors derived from the colon, kidney, or adrenal cortex, and HCC exhibited overexpression of MDR1/P-gp. This overexpression results in a primary MDR phenotype of these cancers.
