Male baldness gene in Caucasians discovered

Researchers at McGill University, King's College London and GlaxoSmithKline Inc. have identified two genetic variants in caucasians that together produce an astounding sevenfold increase the risk of male pattern baldness. Their results will be published Oct. 12 in the journal Nature Genetics.

Better air ventilation in infants' bedrooms linked to reduced SIDS risk

Infants who slept in a bedroom with a fan ventilating the air had a 72 percent lower risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome compared to infants who slept in a bedroom without a fan, according to a new study by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. Weight linked to prostate cancer death

New research, funded in part by the Canadian Cancer Society, shows that men suffering from prostate cancer are up to 2 1/2 times more at risk of dying from the disease if they are overweight or obese. The men who participated in the study had been weighed prior to being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Philippines receives $5 million from Chevron for TB eradication efforts

Chevron Corporation has pledged 235 million Philippine pesos, or about $5 million, to the Tropical Disease Foundation in the Philippines to scale up efforts to fight tuberculosis in the country as part of the company's $30 million contribution over three years for TB eradication efforts in Asia and Africa, GMA News reports.
