FASEB launches web-based portal to enhance biomedical workforce

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) has launched a web-based portal that brings together information on a wide range of programs aimed at increasing the diversity of the biomedical workforce. The FASEB and FASEB Society Resources for Underrepresented Minority Students and Scientists webpage highlights over 50 unique initiatives offered by FASEB and its member societies.

President Jakaya Kikwete of the United Republic of Tanzania spoke at Weill Cornell Medical College today. In his Global Health Grand Rounds lecture, President Kikwete discussed the most significant challenges facing Tanzania, with a particular focus on health care and the advances made during his first term.

Community colleges to have new curriculum to educate HIT workers

Community colleges will soon have the capacity and ability to educate much-needed health information technology workers. Using a new six to 12 month informatics curriculum developed at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and deployed throughout the U.S., local colleges will have access to high-quality HIT educational programs, while helping their instructors supplement their own level of knowledge.

Lauric-acid-filled nano-scale bombs for treating acne

A natural product found in both coconut oil and human breast milk - lauric acid -- shines as a possible new acne treatment thanks to a bioengineering graduate student from the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. The student developed a "smart delivery system" - published in the journal ACS Nano in March - capable of delivering lauric-acid-filled nano-scale bombs directly to skin-dwelling bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) that cause common acne.

UCB Canada Inc. is proud to announce the launch of the 2010 UCBeyond Scholarship Program. Liverpool to ban the word “obese” - offensive to fat kids!

Liverpool City Council is seriuously considering a ban on the word “obese” because it is offensive to overweight and fat children. They plan to replace it with 'unhealthy weight'. Many parents and health authorities cosider this too much and condemn it as 'preposterous'. This idea originated at a mock parliament held in a Liverpool school manned by around 90 students.

Dalhousie University interdisciplinary cooperation leads to innovation of Femoral Fracture Reduction device

It's late at night when most of the city is sleeping and the hospital is eerily quiet. But in the operating room, a tired but undeterred surgeon is struggling through a femoral fracture reduction on a young patient. The surgery, which is usually a meticulous and straightforward procedure, is not going smoothly. After wrestling with the fracture, he has no choice but to take a more invasive approach. He cuts open the femur and reduces the fracture—if not, displaced fat and marrow could cause a fat embolism in the lungs.

Antibiotic-resistant pneumococci increase rate of bacterial infections in children

In the decade since the introduction of pneumococcal vaccination, significant shifts have occurred in the bacterial strains causing serious pneumococcal infections in children, according to a pair of studies in the April issue of The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal (www.PIDJ.com).
