School-based program raises awareness about preventing type 2 diabetes

It is well known that type 2 diabetes is largely a preventable chronic disease with proper nutrition, regular physical activity and the maintenance of a healthy body weight. Yet despite growing awareness, the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) reports that more than three million Canadians currently have diabetes, with an overwhelming 90% of cases reflecting type 2 diabetes. The CDA also suggests that a child born in the year 2000 has a frightening 1 in 3 chance of developing diabetes.

Novo Nordisk Foundation donates $160M to University of Copenhagen for metabolic research

The Center will conduct research into Type 2 diabetes, among other diseases, and will acquire the capacities and resources to establish itself as one of the leading international research centers in the world. With 885 million Danish kroner (approx. 160 million US Dollars) from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, a team of 5 leading research scientists will be headhunted by the University to oversee "The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research".

Sir James Black inventor of beta-blockers passes away

Sir James Black passed away on Monday after a long illness, he was 85. Sir James Black is credited as the inventor of the beta-blocker drugs in 1962. These are drugs which play an important role in the treatment of angina and heart attacks. They are regarded as one of the major medical breakthroughs of the 20th Century in Pharmacology. Born in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, Sir James Black studied medicine at St. Andrews University.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia and OneSight®, a Luxottica Group Foundation have teamed to bring a regional clinic to Georgia from today, Monday, March 22, through Friday, March 26. Prof. Smadar Cohen, head of the University's Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious Rappaport Prize for Excellence in Biomedical Research, an award totaling $100,000. The prize, given by Israel's Rappaport Foundation, is presented annually to a researcher whose research has either significantly advanced or has the potential to significantly advance any medical or biomedical field.
