HIV/AIDS leading cause of death among women ages 15-44, WHO study shows

In follow-up coverage to the WHO's report on women's health, several news outlets examine the impact HIV/AIDS is having on women around the world. "In its first study of women's health, the World Health Organization said yesterday that the AIDS virus is the leading cause of death and disease among women between the ages of 15 and 44," the Associated Press/Boston Globe reports (11/10).

Court denies preliminary injunction against Hologic, Conceptus to continue patent infringement suit

Conceptus, Inc., developer of the Essure® procedure, the first proven non-incisional permanent birth control method available, today announced that the United Stated District Court, Northern District of California has denied Conceptus’ motion for a preliminary injunction prohibiting Hologic, Inc. from importing, using, selling or offering to sell the Adiana system in the United States.

An Indiana University study involving 2,453 women ages 18 to 68 found that lubricant use during sexual activity alone or with a partner contributed to higher ratings of pleasurable and satisfying sex.

Educational video induces girls diagnosed with PID to ensure partner treatment

A study at Johns Hopkins Children's Center found that girls diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) who watched a short educational video were three times more likely to discuss their condition with their partners and to ensure partner treatment than girls diagnosed and treated without seeing the film.

Oral contraceptives may have a potential role in the management of premenopausal women with asthma

New research shows that during natural menstrual cycles, women with asthma who were not taking oral contraceptives (OC) had lower exhaled nitric oxide levels (eNO), a marker of airway inflammation associated with asthma, than women who were taking OC.

Girls' ethnicity and weight linked to participation in risky sexual behaviors

A University of Pittsburgh study sheds new light on the relationship between race, body weight and sexual behavior among adolescent girls. The results suggest that a girl's ethnicity and her actual weight or perception of her weight may play a role in her participation in risky sexual behaviors. The study results are published in the November issue of Pediatrics, now available online.

IPS examines potential for future U.N. population meeting

Inter Press Service examines the possibility of another U.N. conference on development and population within the next five years. Despite progress made since the 1994 conference on population and development (ICPD), U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon recently noted more than 200 million women cannot access safe and effective contraception, and "too many women resort to unsafe abortions because they lack access to family planning," according to the news service.

In light of a recent Guttmacher Institute report that indicated 70,000 women in developing countries die each year from unsafe abortion, a Lancet editorial outlines ways to reduce deaths, and says, "The current political climate is favourable, because the global-gag rule (the U.S. Government's policy on banning funding of foreign organisations linked to any type of abortion practice) is out of favour" (10/17).
