New book to prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration

A new prevention tool is now available, in both French and English, at local bookstores and pharmacies. Dr. Jean-Daniel Arbour and Dr. Pierre Labelle of the Universit- de Montr-al Department of Ophthalmology, along with two colleagues from France, have authored a new book to prevent vision loss, AMD: Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Annika Parance Publisher; 121 pages). Written to educate readers about the importance of vision health, the book provides clear explanations on the causes, consequences and treatments of AMD.

NIDDK awards Albert Einstein College of Medicine $9.5M for continuation of Diabetes Research and Training Center

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University a five-year, $9.5 million grant for the continuation of its Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC). The DRTC was also awarded a $632,000 supplemental grant for equipment and additional pilot and feasibility studies through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), bringing total NIH support to $10,177,000.

Periodontal disease treatment reduces blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes patients

A study to be published in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library and led by researchers at the University of Edinburgh and supported by colleagues at the Peninsula Dental School, the University of Ottawa and UCL Eastman Dental Institute, suggests that the treatment of serious gum (periodontal) disease in diabetics with Type 2 diabetes may lower their blood sugar levels.

Nutraceutical International reports net sales of $47.9M for second-quarter fiscal 2010

Nutraceutical International Corporation today reported results for the fiscal 2010 second quarter ended March 31, 2010. Net sales for the fiscal 2010 second quarter were $47.9 million compared to $42.0 million for the same quarter of fiscal 2009. For the second quarter of fiscal 2010, net income was $5.1 million, or $0.49 diluted earnings per share, compared to a net loss of $(23.4) million, or $(2.15) per diluted share, for the same quarter of fiscal 2009.

Children born very early have abnormal lung function: U.K. researchers

More than half of children who were born very early—at 25 weeks or less (normal gestation is around 40 weeks)— have abnormal lung function and are twice as likely as their full-term peers to have a diagnosis of asthma, according to U.K. researchers, who followed a national cohort of extremely preterm infants to age 11.
