FDA approves ultrasmall silica inorganic nanoparticle INDA for targeted molecular imaging of cancer

Researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Nanotechnology Center, along with collaborators at Cornell University and Hybrid Silica Technologies, have received approval for their first Investigational New Drug Application from the US Food and Drug Administration for an ultrasmall silica inorganic nanoparticle platform for targeted molecular imaging of cancer, which may be useful for cancer treatment in the future.

DSM supports Queensland Premier's 'Disaster Relief Appeal'

Significant flooding occurred in many areas of Queensland during late December 2010 and early January 2011. Thousands of residents were affected. A disaster relief appeal, the 'Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal', was launched on 29 December 2010, by Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh. DSM recognizes the efforts of Queenslanders who pitched in to help their fellow citizens clean-up in the wake of the floods and help families in need, many of whom lost everything.

Findings could speed use of RNA nanotechnology for treating disease

Scientists are reporting an advance in overcoming a major barrier to the use of the genetic material RNA in nanotechnology - the field that involves building machines thousands of times smaller than the width of a human hair and now is dominated by its cousin, DNA. Their findings, which could speed the use of RNA nanotechnology for treating disease, appear in the monthly journal ACS Nano.

Arrowhead increases ownership in Calando's outstanding equity to 79%

Arrowhead Research Corporation today announced that it has invested $1 million in its majority owned subsidiary, Calando Pharmaceuticals, and converted approximately $8M of Calando debt to Arrowhead into equity. Arrowhead now owns approximately 79% of Calando's outstanding equity.

Arrowhead Research Corporation today announced that its Unidym, Inc. subsidiary has been acquired by Wisepower Co., Ltd., a publicly-traded, Seoul, Korea-based electronics company. Upfront consideration to Unidym shareholders consists of Wisepower stock and convertible bonds valued at US $5,000,000 with certain restrictions as to timing of stock sales.

Heart disease patients' skin cells may help test long QT syndrome

Skin cells from a patient with an inherited heart disease were the seeds of a stem cell experiment that could help researchers test specific treatments for the disease, known as long QT syndrome. The research results appear in the January 16 issue of the journal Nature.

Oxford Instruments supplying plasma systems for nanotech discovery at Notre Dame

The Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery (MIND) has purchased two plasma etch and deposition systems from Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology to further expand and facilitate its research capabilities. The FlexAL Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) system and the PlasmaPro System100 ICP etch system, will be installed in the Notre Dame Nanofabrication Facility, a 9,000 sq. ft. cleanroom, in the Stinson-Remick Hall of Engineering located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA.
