Springer launches American Joint Committee on Cancer e-Staging Tool

Springer is launching the AJCC e-Staging Tool, a web-based application which will improve the way cancer is staged. Designed to meet the needs of the entire multidisciplinary team in any facility that deals with cancer, the AJCC e-Staging Tool makes the process quicker, more efficient and more accurate. The content draws from the highly successful AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, 7th edition, published by Springer in 2010.

Accuray Incorporated, a global leader in the field of radiosurgery, announced today that the 100,000th patient has been treated with the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System, a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body. One in four patients treated with CyberKnife radiosurgery received treatment during Accuray's fiscal 2010, which ran July 2009 to June 2010.

Anticancer drug Cisplatin induces side effects

Cisplatin, an anticancer drug widely used for treating various types of tumor, can induce side effects in the short term. A team of scientists, mostly from CNRS and the Université de Nice has provided first in vitro evidence that this antitumor agent modifies the sensitivity of cellular pressure sensors. This completely novel mechanism could help to elucidate certain neurological side effects of cisplatin hitherto unexplained.

Lixte, NCI collaborate for clinical evaluation of LB-100 compound

Lixte Biotechnology Holdings announced today that the National Cancer Institute Experimental Therapeutics (NExT) Program Senior Advisory Committee (SAC), Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), signed a NExT Material Transfer Agreement formalizing a collaboration with Lixte Biotechnology Holdings, Inc. for clinical evaluation of LB-100, one of Lixte's lead anti-cancer compounds.

Preclinical data of Enzon's PEG-SN38 in pediatric neuroblastoma published in Clinical Cancer Research

A protein that pumps calcium out of cells also moonlights as a signal to get massive quantities of the stuff to flow in, according to Johns Hopkins scientists. Their discovery of this surprisingly opposite function, reported Oct. 1 in Cell, highlights the link between calcium and cancer and holds the promise of a new therapeutic target for certain breast cancers.
