Update on Phase II clinical study of CH-4051 in rheumatoid arthritis

Chelsea Therapeutics International, Ltd. announced that during a teleconference yesterday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requested that the company delay the initiation of its proposed Phase II clinical study of CH-4051 in rheumatoid arthritis and indicated that the agency is requesting additional detail from the preclinical studies previously submitted as part of the company's investigational new drug application.

Progenics presents Phase 1 PSMA ADC therapy study data for taxane-refractory prostate cancer at ASCO 2010

Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today presented the design and rationale of an ongoing phase 1 trial of its prostate-specific membrane antigen antibody drug conjugate (PSMA ADC) therapy at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This phase 1 trial is assessing the safety, tolerability and initial clinical activity of progressively increasing doses of PSMA ADC in patients with progressive, metastatic, hormone-refractory prostate cancer following prior taxane chemotherapy.

Form of epigenetics may play role in pulmonary arterial hypertension: Researchers

A rare but fatal disease of blood vessels in the lung may be caused in part by aberrant silencing of genes rather than genetic mutation, new research reports. Pulmonary arterial hypertension, a syndrome characterized by gradual blockage of blood vessels in the lungs, has been linked to genetic causes in a small percentage of patients. But University of Chicago researchers have now found that a form of epigenetics - the modification of gene expression - causes the disease in an animal model and could contribute to the disease in humans.

AVEO's initiation of SCH 900105 Phase 2 trial in non-small cell lung cancer triggers $8.5M milestone payment

AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced that it has initiated a Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating SCH 900105 (also referred to as AV-299) for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The initiation of this trial triggers an $8.5 million milestone payment by Merck to AVEO resulting from a 2007 agreement between AVEO and Schering-Plough (now Merck).

UCSF scientists have discovered a new stem cell in the developing human brain. The cell produces nerve cells that help form the neocortex - the site of higher cognitive function -- and likely accounts for the dramatic expansion of the region in the lineages that lead to man, the researchers say.

DMC recommends ARIAD continue Phase 3 trial of oral ridaforolimus for metastatic sarcomas to final analysis

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) of the Phase 3 SUCCEED trial has completed the second interim efficacy analysis as specified in the study protocol and has recommended that the randomized, placebo-controlled trial of oral ridaforolimus in patients with metastatic sarcomas continue to its final analysis, without modification to the study protocol.

Exelixis reports interim data from XL184 phase 2 trial for recurrent glioblastoma at ASCO 2010

Exelixis, Inc. today reported promising interim data from an ongoing phase 2 trial of XL184 in patients with recurrent glioblastoma (GB), the most common and aggressive form of brain cancer. Dr. Patrick Wen from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA will present the data in an Oral Session (Abstract #2006) on Saturday, June 5 at 5:00 p.m. at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

Long-term data demonstrates clinical benefits of Exelixis XL184 for medullary thyroid cancer

Exelixis, Inc. today reported long-term results in a cohort of 37 medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) patients who participated in the phase 1 study of XL184. Dr. Razelle Kurzrock from the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX will present the data in a Clinical Science Symposium (Abstract #5502) on Monday, June 7 at 10:15 AM at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

Study demonstrates anti-prostate cancer properties of Modified Citrus Pectin

Researchers at Columbia University recently analyzed the positive effects of Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) on human and mouse prostate cancer cell lines. The results, as reported by lead researcher Dr. Aaron Katz in the online-first publication of Integrative Cancer Therapies, show that MCP inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) in both androgen-dependent and androgen-independent cancer cells in a time and dose-dependent manner.

Researchers investigate aberrant expression of nuclear matrix proteins in gastric cancer cells

Gastric cancer is the most common malignant gastrointestinal cancer and accounts for 25% of cancer deaths. Nuclear matrix, a filamentous protein framework for eukaryotic cellular chromatin, closely relates to DNA duplication and transcription. Research on nuclear matrix proteins will provide insight into how tumors developed.

Protein PEA-15 stops T-cell proliferation

New research has identified that a key protein called PEA-15 stops T-cell proliferation by blocking the cell's ability to reproduce. The control of T-cell proliferation is essential in preventing certain blood cancers and autoimmune diseases, as well as the orchestration of the immune response to infection. Findings of the study are reported in a recent online issue of The FASEB Journal, a publication of The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
