Aphios awarded US patent for process to formulate polymeric microspheres, nanospheres

Aphios Corporation today announced that it was awarded United States Patent No. 7,708,915 B2 for "Polymer Microspheres/Nanospheres and Encapsulating Therapeutic Proteins Therein," granted May 04, 2010. This invention is an improved process to formulate polymeric microspheres and nanospheres, and encapsulate therapeutic proteins or other useful substances, and a polymer microspheres/nanospheres apparatus.

imec researchers demonstrate biosensors that detect extremely low concentrations of disease markers

Researchers at the nanotechnology research centre imec have demonstrated biosensors based on novel nanostructure geometries that increase the sensitivity and allow to detect extremely low concentrations of specific disease markers. This paves the way to early diagnostics of for example cancer by detecting low densities of cancer markers in human blood samples.

Effects of periodic constrictions on drift, diffusion in systems experiencing driving force

An understanding of particle diffusion in the presence of constrictions is essential in fields as diverse as drug delivery, cellular biology, nanotechnology, materials engineering, and spread of pollutants in the soil. When a driving force is applied, displacement of particles occurs as well as diffusion. A paper in the Journal of Chemical Physics, which is published by the American Institute of Physics (AIP), quantifies the effects of periodic constrictions on drift and diffusion in systems experiencing a driving force.

The Gary and Mary West Foundation today announced a $25 million commitment to enable the West Wireless Health Institute (WWHI) to amplify its aggressive recruitment of world class engineering talent and accelerate its mission on a national and global scale. The additional funding comes on the heels of a $20 million grant announced last month, and brings the total support provided by the foundation to nearly $100 million since the Institute's inception in March 2009.

Celator presents new data on CPX-351 liposome injection at European Hematology Association congress

Celator Pharmaceuticals today announced that new data from a preclinical leukemia study in mice demonstrate that its lead product, CPX-351 (Cytarabine:Daunorubicin) Liposome Injection, alone or in combination with clofarabine or azacytidine can improve treatment outcomes compared to the combination of either agent with the conventional (unencapsulated) cytarabine:daunorubicin regimen.

NJIT biomedical engineer awarded $1.3M grant to develop better ways to help stroke patients

Helping stroke patients regain use of their hands and arms through innovative robotic and virtual reality-based video game therapies is the focal point of NJIT Associate Professor Sergei Adamovich, a biomedical engineer. Thanks to a $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, Adamovich is developing better ways to rehabilitate people who have lost control of their hands, fingers, shoulders and elbows.

Leonardo Biosystems receives $2.5M grant to accelerate commercialization of new technologies

Arrowhead Research Corporation announced today that its portfolio company, Leonardo Biosystems, has received a $2.5 million grant from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, a state fund established to accelerate commercialization of new technologies. Leonardo Biosystems, co-founded by prominent nanoscientist Dr. Mauro Ferrari, professor at the University of Texas, and Arrowhead's, CEO Dr. Christopher Anzalone, is engineering a multi-stage drug delivery platform to improve the effectiveness of drug therapy, particularly for cancer.

Yeast produce a hormone that triggers fungal cells to become more infectious

In their ongoing studies of how yeast (fungi) can infect a host and cause disease, a research team at the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has made an unexpected discovery. They found that yeast produce a hormone previously known to be made by plants, and that the presence of that hormone in sufficient quantity within the yeast's immediate environment triggers the fungal cells to become more infectious.

T2 Biosystems raises $15 million to accelerate development of next generation diagnostic platform

T2 Biosystems, Inc., a company developing the first decentralized clinical diagnostic solution that eliminates extensive sample preparation and enables rapid molecular and immunodiagnostic testing on a single instrument, today announced that it has raised approximately $15 million in a Series C financing. Proceeds from the financing will be used to accelerate the development and commercialization of T2 Biosystems' next generation diagnostic platform for use in the decentralized setting.
