CINJ experts available to comment on blood donations

Every two seconds, someone in the United States is in need of blood. According to the American Red Cross, more than 38,000 blood donations are needed each day. With just one donation of a pint of blood, up to three lives can be saved. In New Jersey, according to the state Department of Health and Senior Services, fewer than four percent of eligible residents donate regularly, resulting in the need for critical blood donations.

A new study from the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and Menzies Research Institute has found that obese children who shed weight in later years can reverse the damage done to their health by being overweight and it is really never too late. Overweight people reportedly have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, clogged arteries or atherosclerosis, high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure.

"Sleep is extremely important for all of us, but especially for infants. It's when kids grow. CNN profiles Global Soap Project's work in sanitation

As part of its "CNN Heroes" series, CNN examines the Global Soap Project, started by Derreck Kayongo, a Ugandan war refugee and one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes of 2011. Group launches effort to improve dental health

A group of advocacy organizations Tuesday launched the Campaign for Dental Health, an effort designed to promote oral health and to urge states and local governments to help prevent dental problems by investing in such prevention strategies as water fluoridation. Voices for America's Children, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Pew Children's Dental Campaign are spearheading this effort.
