Boston Scientific reports positive data from PLATINUM Element Stent quantitative coronary angiography study

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced data from its PLATINUM QCA study, which is designed to evaluate the Company's PROMUS Element™ Everolimus-Eluting Platinum Chromium Coronary Stent. The results provided 30-day and nine-month clinical outcomes and nine-month quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) data supporting the safety and efficacy of the PROMUS Element Stent.

Patients under age 45 had fewer major complications than older patients and comparable improvement after a medical procedure to treat irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia, in a study reported in Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, an American Heart Association journal.

Omega receives CAP accreditation for forensic drug testing of hair

Omega Laboratories, Inc. today announced that it has received accreditation for forensic drug testing of hair from the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors carefully review the laboratory's records and quality control procedures for the preceding two years, as well as the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety program and record. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications and the overall management of the laboratory.

Biodegradable polymers represent future of stent design

Three-year data demonstrated that satisfactory clinical and safety outcomes of sirolimus eluting stents with a biodegradable polymer were sustained in a real world setting. Paper highlights need for new studies and guidelines around oxygen therapy during MI

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) welcomes a paper published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC )(1) highlighting concerns over the use of oxygen therapy during MI in patients with normal oxygen levels. The publication adds to calls for revision of the STEMI guidelines around oxygen therapy and for a prospective, large scale randomised trials, issues that were both first raised in a Cochrane Review published in June.

Bariatric surgery rates rise among adolescents

According to recent surveys more and more adolescents need bariatric surgery for morbid obesity. This procedure was earlier reserved only for adults. Researchers say that from 2005 to 2007, the rate of gastric banding has jumped nearly seven-fold among youths aged 13 to 20. The process involves placement of a band around the upper part of the stomach using a laparoscope. The study appeared in the journal Pediatrics.

New interventional technique effective for controlling hepatic arterial hemorrhage after PD

Delayed hepatic arterial hemorrhage after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is not a common but a fatal complication, occurring in 7% of all patients. Its ideal management remains unclear and controversial. A research article published on August 7, 2010 in the World Journal of Gastroenterology addresses this question. The authors reported the clinical outcome of 9 patients with life-threatening hemorrhage from a ruptured hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm after PD after treatment with a new interventional technique, namely placement of stent-grafts.
