Study reveals X+ allele of APOB gene as another risk factor of gallstone formation after gastrectomy

The cause of higher incidence of gallstone after radical gastrectomy still remains unknown. Almost all previous studies have attributed gallstone formation to gallbladder motility disorder after gastrectomy, But this theory cannot completely explain it. Is there any other risk factor of gallstone formation after gastrectomy?

Landmark study compares oral and transvaginal NOTES to traditional laparoscopy

As part of the only U.S. prospective multicenter clinical trial to compare natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery to laparoscopy, surgeons at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have performed the trial's first oral gallbladder removal. This landmark study will evaluate whether or not NOTES is safe and as effective as traditional laparoscopic surgery.

BioMimetic reports final study results comparing Augment Bone Graft to autograft in foot, ankle fusion surgery

BioMimetic Therapeutics will report today the final, one year results of its North American Pivotal Study comparing Augment Bone Graft to autograft in foot and ankle fusion surgery. The presentation of the data by Dr. Timothy Daniels, associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Toronto and St. Michaels Hospital, will take place at the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) summer meeting.

AUGIB patients more likely to suffer further bleeding with early red blood cell transfusion

Doctors have called for an urgent review of transfusion policies after a UK-wide study of over 200 hospitals found that patients admitted with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB) are more than twice as likely to suffer further bleeding if they receive a red blood cell transfusion within 12 hours.

Medicare reimbursement rates for outpatient repair of anal fistulas increased by 6%

Hospitals nationwide will receive six percent higher reimbursement payments for outpatient repair of anal fistulas using Cook Medical's Biodesign® Fistula Plug, a device designed specifically to treat this painful and embarrassing disorder of the lower GI tract. According to new Medicare payment schedules effective January 1st, hospital outpatient surgery departments will receive approximately $2,200 per procedure, while freestanding ambulatory surgery centers will be paid about $1,300 on average.

Aastrom to pursue Phase 3 CLI clinical program through FDA SPA process
