FDA approves TachoSil adjunctive hemostatic agent for use in cardiovascular surgery

Baxter International Inc. and Nycomed today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of TachoSil (Absorbable Fibrin Sealant Patch) for use as an adjunct to hemostasis in cardiovascular surgery. TachoSil is the first and only adjunctive hemostatic agent available in the U.S. that combines a collagen patch with a coating of human coagulation factors.

Individualized therapies for treating type 2 diabetes recommended

Chevy Chase, MD-Patients with type 2 diabetes are generally treated similarly despite the fact that they may have underlying differences that could affect their therapeutic response. Seeking to address this critical health issue, an international multidisciplinary group of experts just issued recommendations for individualized treatment in a consensus statement to be published in the April 2010 issue of the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

LCA-Vision reports 19,066 procedures performed during first-quarter 2010

NPCs as effective as doctors in performing Caesarean sections

Every year, some 7.5 million mothers and new-borns die during pregnancy or childbirth, almost all of whom are in low and middle-income countries. One reason for this is the lack of trained medical staff, particularly doctors. A doctoral thesis from Karolinska Institutet now shows that a solution could be the training of nurses in caesarean sections and other life-saving surgery.

Multnomah Court Judge denies I-Flow's request for new trial

Judge Youlee You today denied a request by defendant I-Flow for a new trial in Multnomah County Circuit Court. The ruling follows the January 22 jury verdict against the pain pump manufacturer. Jurors awarded $5.475 million for the destruction of Portland-area resident Matthew Beale's right shoulder. They found the damage was caused by the On-Q Painbuster infusion pain pump, manufactured and marketed by I-Flow.
