Boston Scientific rebuts HeartRhythm's cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator implantation article

Boston Scientific Corporation today rebutted an article published in the journal HeartRhythm. The article reported a case summary of a patient who had been implanted subcutaneously with a Cognis cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator. The article suggested a weakened header bond was responsible for the abnormal sensing and pacing impedance experienced by the patient.

SafeStitch Medical's AMID Stapler receives European CE Mark

SafeStitch Medical, Inc. announced today that it has received CE Mark authorization to commercialize its AMID StaplerTM in the European Economic Community. The new stapler is to be used for fixation of mesh in the repair of hernia defects and also for the approximation of tissues, including skin. The AMID Stapler™ is the first surgical stapler designed specifically for use in inguinal hernia repairs using the Lichtenstein method, in which mesh is implanted for reinforcement. SafeStitch announced in November 2009 that it had received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for sale of the AMID StaplerTM in the U.S. market.

Obese adolescents who receive laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding lose excess weight

A higher percentage of severely obese adolescents who received laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding lost more than 50 percent of excess weight and experienced greater benefits to health and quality of life compared to those in an intensive lifestyle management program, according to a study in the February 10 issue of JAMA.

FoP in patients with chronic arthritis or cancer: Group psychotherapy may help

A controlled study by a group of German investigators published in the current issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics indicates that brief group psychotherapy is helpful for clearing fears of disease progression (FoP) in patients with chronic arthritis or cancer. The interventions comprised either cognitive-behavioral group therapy or supportive-experiential group therapy. The investigators tested whether these generic interventions would prove effective in different illness types.

Increased Medicare reimbursement leads to rise in outpatient bladder cancer surgeries

Increased Medicare payments to physicians for outpatient surgeries for bladder cancer have led to a dramatic rise in the number of these procedures being performed and an overall increase in cost to the healthcare system. That is the conclusion of a new study published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The findings indicate that some Medicare policies aimed at decreasing costs may instead be contributing to an increase in healthcare expenditures.

Results of a clinical study presented Thursday, Feb. 4 at the annual Triological Society meetings in Orlando, Fla., suggest a sterile barrier sheath system has distinct advantages over germicidal immersion processes used to prevent contamination of fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopes (flexible ENT scopes). Flexible ENT scopes are used by otolaryngologists to examine the nose and throat area for various disorders such as dysphagia, reflux disease, snoring, and chronic sinusitis.
