To succeed in efforts to reduce poverty in Africa, countries need to make disaster preparedness a priority in national development plans, Margareta Wahlstrom, U.N. deputy emergency relief coordinator, said Wednesday during the Second Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Africa, the Daily Nation reports.

Trans fats are hydrogenated solid fats that are found in deep fried foods, margarine, bakery products, fast foods etc. they are used because they are cheap and keep better. However it has long been known that these fats are bad for the heart leading to heart attacks, strokes and high blood cholesterol etc.

Volcanic ash falls across Europe

Flights were cancelled across Europe today thanks to volcanic ash drifting in to northern Europe from Iceland. More than 250 flights were grounded from London’s Gatwick and Heathrow airports alone, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The ash is drifting in from a volcanic eruption in Iceland and the cloud is capable of damaging jet engines that travel through it.
