Study indicates binge drinking does not impact students' test performance

In a first-of-its kind controlled experiment, researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) and Brown University have found that surprisingly, binge drinking the night before a test does not impact college students' test performance - although it can affect their moods, attention and reaction times.

E Cigarettes Choice to release limited edition of SS Choice STEALTH E-cigarette

E Cigarettes Choice announced today that they will release a limited edition of the SS Choice No.7 STEALTH, which they originally designed for the military. The STEALTH E-cigarette (Military Version) design was released to soldiers last summer and has been battle tested in Iraq and Afghanistan with overwhelming success.

Labeling calories on menus mandatory – unhealthy eating discouraged further

With the newly passed healthcare bill calorie counts at fast food and chain restaurants become mandatory. More than 200,000 fast food and other chain restaurants will have to include calorie counts on menus, menu boards, buffets, vending machines, alcoholic drink menus and even drive-throughs.

Sir James Black inventor of beta-blockers passes away

Sir James Black passed away on Monday after a long illness, he was 85. Sir James Black is credited as the inventor of the beta-blocker drugs in 1962. These are drugs which play an important role in the treatment of angina and heart attacks. They are regarded as one of the major medical breakthroughs of the 20th Century in Pharmacology. Born in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, Sir James Black studied medicine at St. Andrews University.

NPR's Car Talk guys, Tom and Ray Magliozzi, may be a couple of motor mouths, but they always put a lid on using cell phones behind the wheel. The Last Supper : Biblical growth of food portions

The abundant availability of food has become directly reflected in the paintings of the Last Supper made over the centuries. As we struggle less to get our food, the plates sizes and portions of food painted in by artists in depictions of the last supper of Jesus with his apostles also gets influenced. In a comparative study of 52 paintings all depicting the momentous event some rather interesting facts came to light.The study which was published by the International Journal of Obesity (April 2010) and conducted by Cornell University was the brain child of Brian Wansink.

World's slum population increased by 55M since 2000, despite exodus of 227M, report says

"Almost a quarter of a billion people moved out of slum conditions in the past decade," but the number of people living in shantytowns around the world "increased by 55 million to 827.6 million as population growth and migration from the countryside outstripped the effect of upward mobility in cities," according to a U.N. Habitat report, released Friday, in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the five-day World Urban Forum "on the state of the world's cities," Reuters reports (3/19).

Australian Food Industry pledges salt reductions

“While salt is an important part of people’s diet, eating too much can be harmful and that’s why industry has been involved in salt reduction strategies for a number of years,” said Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) Chief Executive Kate Carnell, who highlighted that increased salt in diet is directly linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

FDA to have greater tobacco and cigarette control

Starting Tuesday, June 22 the Food and Drug Administration will have far greater control over how tobacco and cigarettes are marketed, distributed and sold. The announcement on Thursday, March 18 was made by Kathleen Sebelius, the US Health and Human Services Secretary.
