APWU Health Plan along with UnitedHealthcare created calendars to educate and motivate postal and federal employees to live life well. The calendar included tips on staying healthy, an exercise log and various links to sites of interest.

Revised model will help scientists in understanding transport of fluid constituents

Combined mechanisms of transport have important applications-transport of nutrients across cell membranes in plants and animals, the aeration of agricultural soils, performance of chemical reactors, the design of membranes for desalting brackish water, and the design of clay membranes for retaining dangerous chemicals. Because mass transport of fluid constituents has important roles in biology, physics, and chemistry, one would assume that such transport would be well understood by the scientific community.

Taxing unhealthy foods may promote healthy food choices

Recently, the Obama administration called for a total ban on candy and soda in the nation's schools. States are beginning to impose "sin taxes" on fat and sugar to dissuade people from eating junk food. Pricing strategies may well be a key to changing behavior, but others favor subsidies over punitive taxes, as a way to encourage people to eat fruits and vegetables and whole grains.

Today, nutrition experts and physicians who participated in the NIH Consensus Development Conference on Lactose Intolerance and Health released an important report that concluded individuals who ingest inadequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D because of real or perceived lactose intolerance need dietary advice to ensure appropriate intake of missing nutrients.

Yoga program to help address coping skills and new lifestyle initiatives for domestic violence survivors

This week marks the first of its kind yoga-based collaboration between actor-filmmaker and yoga teacher Rich Tola's nonprofit organization, The Boulevard Zen Foundation Inc., and survivors of domestic violence residing at The Good Shepherd Shelter. The foundation brings yoga to shelters and was conceived by Tola upon completion of his film "Boulevard Zen," a story of one man who touches the lives of many through the practice of yoga.

Issued at a meeting of Basel Convention and other world chemical authorities prior to UNEP's Governing Council meeting in Bali, Indonesia, the report, "Recycling - from E-Waste to Resources," used data from 11 representative developing countries to estimate current and future e-waste generation - which includes old and dilapidated desk and laptop computers, printers, mobile phones, pagers, digital photo and music devices, refrigerators, toys and televisions.
