Zogenix secures $35M financing for commercial launch of SUMAVEL DosePro needle-free delivery system

Zogenix, Inc., a privately held pharmaceutical company, announced that it has secured a $35 million debt facility led by Oxford Finance Corporation which also included Silicon Valley Bank. The facility consists of a $25 million term loan and a $10 million revolving line of credit. Concurrently, all existing Zogenix investors, including Clarus Ventures, Domain Associates, Scale Venture Partners, Thomas, McNerney & Partners, Abingworth Management, and Chicago Growth Partners, have provided an additional $15 million investment.

MAP Pharmaceuticals reports results from LEVADEX PK and safety clinical trial in smokers, non-smokers

MAP Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced results from a clinical trial comparing the pharmacokinetics (PK) and safety of LEVADEX™ orally inhaled migraine therapy with intravenous dihydroergotamine mesylate (DHE) in smokers and non-smokers. The trial was designed to measure whether systemic absorption and exposure in smokers is greater than in non-smokers. In the trial, the systemic absorption of LEVADEX was not higher and systemic exposure to DHE was not greater in smokers than in non-smokers.

Allergan receives UK MHRA authorisation of BOTOX for prophylaxis of headache in chronic migraine

Allergan is pleased to announce that BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) has been licensed by the MHRA in the UK for the prophylaxis of headaches in adults who have chronic migraine (headaches on at least 15 days per month of which at least 8 days are with migraine). This is the first licence worldwide of BOTOX® for this indication, and is also the first prophylactic (preventative) treatment to receive a specific licence for patients with chronic migraine.

FDA approves Roxane's Naratriptan Tablets ANDA

Roxane Laboratories, Inc. announced today the approval of its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Naratriptan Tablets USP, 1mg and 2.5mg by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The product is available in bottles of 9 for immediate shipment to wholesalers and pharmacies nationwide.

GSK, XenoPort disappointed with GSK1838262/XP13512 phase 2b study for migraine headaches

GlaxoSmithKline and XenoPort, Inc. announced today that GSK1838262/XP13512 (gabapentin enacarbil) did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement compared to placebo as a prophylactic treatment for migraine headaches. This phase 2b dose-ranging study evaluated the efficacy, safety and tolerability of GSK1838262 in adults diagnosed with migraine headache (with or without aura) according to the International Headache Society criteria.

MonoSol Rx, the developers of PharmFilm® technology and a drug delivery company specializing in film pharmaceutical products, in collaboration with APR Applied Pharma Research s.a. of Switzerland and Labtec GmbH of Germany, today announced that its partner, Strativa Pharmaceuticals has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Zuplenz® oral soluble film for the prevention of postoperative, highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy-induced, and radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Jane Harrop, a 30 year old British woman was complaining of headaches for several days that made her feel “drunk”. She was diagnosed to be suffering from migraine but died two days later from a viral infection of the brain.

PuraMed BioScience completes clinical study of LipiGesic M for treating acute migraine

PuraMed BioScience, announced today that a clinical study of LipiGesic M has been completed. The study design was a double blind, placebo controlled, multi-site study measuring the effectiveness of LipiGesic™ M for the treatment of acute migraine attacks. The next steps include completion of the manuscript, submission for publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal and actual publication. In an effort to maximize the potential for publication, an embargo has been placed on the disclosure of any of the results of this study.

Endo responds to FDA Complete Response letter for FORTESTA NDA

Endo Pharmaceuticals has submitted a complete response to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following the company's receipt of a Complete Response letter in October 2009 related to the New Drug Application (NDA) submission for FORTESTA™ (testosterone) 2% gel. The company's Class 2 resubmission is the next step in its intention to offer FORTESTA as a treatment option in the United States for men diagnosed with low testosterone (Low T), also known as hypogonadism. The FDA's review period for Class 2 resubmissions typically is six months.

Researchers looking for the first time at how migraine sufferers experience the stigmatizing effects of their disease show that chronic migraine sufferers experience worse stigma than episodic migraine sufferers and more than those with other neurological diseases including stroke, epilepsy and MS.

AGA refused permission to appeal UK Supreme Court for Figulla ASD and PFO occluder patent infringement

In 2009 the Patents Court of the High Court, Chancery Division, decided that Occlutech's range of Figulla ASD and PFO occluders do not infringe the U.K. part of European Patent 0 808 138. AGA Medical decided to appeal against this decision. The U.K. Court of Appeal (civil division) in London announced its decision confirming that said Figulla ASD and PFO occluders do not infringe said patent.

MSD enters collaboration with Adcock Ingram to co-promote, distribute products in South Africa

Merck (Merck is known as MSD outside the United States and Canada) today announced a strategic collaboration between MSD South Africa and Adcock Ingram, a publicly held South African company, to co-promote and distribute a number of established MSD products in South Africa. The products that will be jointly promoted by MSD and Adcock Ingram include over-the-counter (OTC) products and selected prescription medicines currently registered in South Africa by MSD and Schering-Plough.
