What is Marfan Syndrome?

Marfan syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in every 5000 individuals. It is an autosomal dominant disorder therefore the majority of people with Marfan syndrome have a 50% chance of inheriting the defective gene from whichever parent who suffers from the disorder. Alternatively, in approximately 25-30% of those with Marfan syndrome the condition has developed due to a spontaneous mutation yielding the defective gene.

What is Lymphedema?

The lymphatic system is characterized by a complex and extensive network of lymph vessels which is responsible for the transport of lymph fluid (containing compounds such as proteins and lipids) to and from tissues. During its transport, the fluid is filtered by the lymph nodes – these contain residential lymphocytes. In this way, the lymphatic system is an integral part of the body’s immunity.
