Curis prices registered direct offering

Curis, Inc. announced today that it has priced a registered direct offering of 6,449,288 units, at a price of $2.52 per unit, for gross proceeds of $16.25 million before deducting placement agents’ fees and estimated offering expenses. Each unit consists of one share of the company's common stock and a warrant to buy 0.25 of a share of the company's common stock. The warrants will be exercisable for a period of five years beginning on the date of issuance, at an exercise price of $3.55 per share.

NIH awards grants to develop new tobacco-related drug therapies

Four scientists at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center have been awarded more than $2.2 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to research the effects of nicotine and develop new tobacco-related drug therapies.

California revives bill to create single-payer health care system

The Associated Press/Los Angeles Times: "A key legislative committee in California revived a bill Thursday to create a government-run health care system in the nation's most populous state ... The legislation had been held over from last year because of the state's ongoing budget crisis. The full Senate could vote on the bill by next week. Creating a single-payer system would cost California an estimated $210 billion in its first year. That's roughly double the size of the total state budget..." (Thompson, 1/21).

Free testing will take place on AHF’s new, state-of-the-art ‘Testing America’ mobile HIV testing unit. AHF is working in conjunction with New Mexico AIDS Services, a respected local non-profit HIV/AIDS organization.

Findings offer potential significance to the recovery of walking after spinal cord injury

Researchers at the medical university Karolinska Institutet have created a genetically modified mouse in which certain neurons can be activated by blue light. Shining blue light on brainstems or spinal cords isolated from these mice produces walking-like motor activity. The findings, which are published in the scientific journal Nature Neuroscience, are of potential significance to the recovery of walking after spinal cord injury.

In response to the dire need for emergency humanitarian aid in Haiti, St. John Ambulance is sending an initial team of first aid and emergency medical care experts to Jacmel. The team is expected to leave Montreal by the end of the month. This first team's assessment of local needs will be used to plan the long-term deployment of subsequent teams. Teams will be deployed and supervised from Montreal.
