Yaupon reports positive results from mechlorethamine gel study for early-stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma

Yaupon Therapeutics, a privately held specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced positive top-line results from the pivotal multi-center study of its lead product candidate, a proprietary topical mechlorethamine gel for the treatment of early-stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL - stages I-IIa). The top-line data show that the study, which was conducted under a Special Protocol Assessment (SPA), achieved its primary and secondary endpoints.

Vical prices underwritten common stock public offering

Vical Incorporated today announced the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 15,000,000 shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $2.25 per share. The gross proceeds to us from this offering are expected to be approximately $33.8 million, before deducting underwriting discounts and commissions and other estimated offering expenses payable by us. The offering is expected to close on or about September 29, 2010, subject to customary closing conditions.

Oncothyreon Inc., announced it has entered into a securities purchase agreement in connection with a private placement. Upon the closing of the private placement, Oncothyreon will receive gross proceeds of approximately $14.9 million resulting from the sale of approximately 4.24 million units at a purchase price of $3.50 per unit.

Concerted effort yields significant progress in reducing depression, HIV/AIDS, and osteoporosis in women

A concerted effort to boost research on women's health over the last two decades has lessened the burden of disease and reduced deaths among women due to cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and cervical cancer, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. The effort has yielded less but still significant progress in reducing the effects of depression, HIV/AIDS, and osteoporosis on women, added the committee that wrote the report.

LSU researchers receive Rapid Response Grants from National Science Foundation

Since the Deepwater Horizon disaster began in the Gulf of Mexico, experts have debated the potential impact of the oil and the dispersants used to break it up. What will it do to seafood? Or the delicate wetland ecosystems lining the Gulf of Mexico, particularly those already in danger near the mouth of the Mississippi? Two groups of LSU researchers have received Rapid Response Grants from the National Science Foundation, or NSF, to study these and other implications relating to the oil and dispersants now in the Gulf of Mexico.

Warner Chilcott plc today announced that it has agreed to terminate its existing co-promotion agreement with Novartis and signed a definitive agreement to purchase the U.S. rights to Enablex® from Novartis for $400 million in cash. Enablex (darifenacin) is a product indicated to treat adults with symptoms of overactive bladder, which had U.S. sales of approximately $190 million for the year ended December 31, 2009.
