Study reveals anti-diabetic properties of cashew seed extract

Cashew seed extract shows promise as an effective anti-diabetic, according to a new study from the University of Montreal (Canada) and the Universit- de Yaound- (Cameroun). Published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, the investigation analyzed the reputed health benefits of cashew tree products on diabetes, notably whether cashew extracts could improve the body's response to its own insulin.

Keck School of Medicine receives grant for research on biomarker impact on breast cancer screening

Researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) will test whether a set of blood-based biomarkers can assist mammography in the early detection of breast cancer with a $180,000 grant announced today from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. The grant will fund research into whether specific biomarkers, or minute substances in the blood, can effectively distinguish breast cancer patients from their healthy counterparts and whether an inexpensive, less invasive screening strategy can be developed based on this approach.

Osseon Therapeutics, Inc., a biomedical device company based in Santa Rosa, California, today received a notice of allowance for its spinal vertebral compression fracture (VCF) technology. The company which was started in 2006 has thirteen additional patent applications pending in the United States and throughout the world for related spinal therapies and devices. First triple-organ transplantation performed on young Brenham resident at Texas Children's Hospital

Texas Children's Hospital in Houston has performed the hospital's first triple-organ transplant on a 16-year-old Brenham resident. The patient, Taylor Sherrouse, underwent a 13-hour surgery on Tuesday, June 22 to replace her heart, lungs and liver, which had been severely damaged by cystic fibrosis. Taylor is one of only three pediatric patients in the country this decade to receive heart, lungs and liver in one operation.

Merck acquires Millipore for $7.0 billion

Merck KGaA, a global pharmaceutical and chemical company, today announced the successful completion of its acquisition of Millipore Corporation, a leading Life Science company based in Billerica, Massachusetts, USA, for an aggregate purchase price including debt and cash of approximately $7.0 billion. Merck agreed to acquire Millipore on February 28, 2010 for $107 in cash per share of Millipore common stock.

Children with highest levels of FeNO more likely to develop asthma: Study

Children with elevated levels of exhaled nitric oxide are at increased risk for developing asthma, particularly among children without a parental history of the disease, a study by US researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) has found. The study is published ahead of print in the European Respiratory Journal.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a US subsidiary of Novartis AG, and Sanford Wittels & Heisler, LLP, Counsel to the Plaintiffs and the Class, have announced an amicable end to their litigation. Today the parties filed papers in the Southern District of New York memorializing a settlement agreement including up to USD 152.5 million in payments to eligible class members and NPC's funding, over three years, of improvements to policies and programs valued at an estimated USD 22.5 million.

GlaxoSmithKline confirmed today that a joint advisory committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted to allow Avandia to remain on the market. Committee members voted for recommendations ranging from making no changes to the current label, to revising the label with additional warnings and restrictions to withdrawal from the U.S. market.
