Victoza produces greater reductions in A1C, FPG and body weight than Januvia: Study

Yesterday, The Lancet published online the results of the first study comparing the once-daily human GLP-1 analog, Victoza (liraglutide [rDNA] injection) with a DPP-4 inhibitor, Januvia. The 26-week trial showed that Victoza produced significantly greater reductions in A1C, fasting plasma glucose, and body weight than Januvia, with similar or better overall treatment satisfaction.

Study finds prevalence of psychiatric disorders in extremely preterm survivors

Significant advances in the neonatal intensive care have resulted in increased survival rates of children who are born at less than 26 weeks of gestation, so termed "extremely preterm children". Notably, however, improved survival rates have been accompanied by a higher risk for later cognitive, neuromotor, and sensory impairments in these children.

PMI releases 6-year malaria strategy

The U.S. government Thursday released a six-year strategy to address malaria globally, Reuters reports (Fox, 4/22). The plan was issued through the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) in conjunction with World Malaria Day, April 25, and is a "core component of President [Barack] Obama's Global Health Initiative," according to a USAID press release (4/22).

AFFiRiS AG's clinical Alzheimer's vaccine candidate AD02 has already progressed to phase II clinical testing. It may therefore be possible to confirm the efficacy of the vaccine as early as during 2012. Indeed the start of this efficacy study comes only five months after the completion of the corresponding phase I study. The company is active in several disease areas and is currently developing a total of twelve prospective products in all stages of the development pipeline up to clinical phase II.

Modern Healthcare: The federal Health Information Technology Policy Committee is calling for the development of a national program that would monitor patient safety problems in health care IT systems. "The first among the work group's recommendations was a proposal to create 'a national transparent oversight process and information system,' similar to a patient-safety organization, that could receive reports from various sources about patient-safety issues linked to the use of healthcare IT systems."

LFA felicitates Yale University professor on receipt of US DoD's PRMRP research grant

The Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. (LFA) congratulates Insoo Kang, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, Yale University for being selected to receive a $1.2 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Defense's (DoD) Congressionally Directed Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP). The DoD award will fund a three-year study that will investigate whether and why lupus patients make more of the chemical interleukin (IL-27), which causes decreased generation of T cells and is known to play an important role in autoimmunity and lupus.
