Admission to a hospital when most of the beds are already full can be deadly for patients, according to a new University of Michigan Health System study showing high occupancy increases the risk of dying in the hospital by 5.6 percent.

Americans for Tax Reform asks for clarification on applicability of 2.9% surtax on capital gains

Americans for Tax Reform today sent a letter to President Obama asking him to clarify whether or not the 2.9 percent surtax on "unearned income" applies to capital gains. If Obama's tax increase does fall on capital gains, the marginal tax rate on capital gains will eventually rise to 22.9 percent from today's level of 15 percent.

Cantel Medical's fiscal 2010 second-quarter net income up 29%

CANTEL MEDICAL CORP. reported a 29% increase in net income to $4,876,000, or $0.29 per diluted share, on a 6.7% increase in sales to $66,587,000 for the second quarter ended January 31, 2010. This compares with net income of $3,774,000, or $0.23 per diluted share, on sales of $62,420,000 for the second quarter ended January 31, 2009.

Ischemix commences CMX-2043 Phase 2a trial for prevention of peri-operative ischemia-reperfusion injury

Ischemix today announced the initiation of patient accrual in a multi-center Phase 2a clinical trial of CMX-2043 for the prevention of peri-operative ischemia-reperfusion injury in patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures. Children with serious intestinal problems have to be fed intravenously. There moreover, exist systems that enable intravenous feeding to be carried out at home. Mr I-aki Irastorza, paediatrician at the Cruces hospital in Bilbao, spent some 15 years analysing how serious intestinal problems in children were treated at the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London. With the gathered data he has presented a highly novel PhD thesis at the University of the Basque Country.
