Merck discontinues MK-1903 niacin receptor agonist development program with Arena Pharmaceuticals

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today Merck and Co., Inc.'s decision (through an affiliate) to discontinue development of MK-1903, an investigational niacin receptor agonist to treat atherosclerosis being developed under its research collaboration with Arena. Merck also informed Arena that the company will not continue the collaboration.

AARP calls on Senators to vote in favor of health care reform bill

While Washington, D.C. couldn't seem further away to most Idaho families this holiday season, rising health care costs are an issue that's hitting much closer to home. As Idaho's health care woes grow increasingly worse, AARP is calling on Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch to vote in favor of the Senate health care reform bill expected to come up for a vote Christmas Eve, and is sending the Senators a "Christmas List" of Idaho's health care crisis.

Bovie Medical's Resistick II coated electrodes receive FDA 510(k) clearance

Bovie Medical Corporation, a manufacturer and marketer of electrosurgical products, today announced the Company has received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its line of coated blades, needles and ball electrodes used for cutting and coagulating soft tissues during surgical procedures. Resistick II is coating applied to stainless steel which resists eschar (scab or scar tissue caused by burning) during surgery. The coated electrodes continue the expansion of the Bovie line of electrosurgical disposables.

Nursing shortage awaits baby boomers

CNNMoney reports: "Baby boomers are getting older and will require more care than ever, taxing an already strained nursing system. America has had a nursing shortage for years, said Peter Buerhaus, workforce analyst at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville, Tenn. But by 2025, the country will be facing a shortfall of 260,000 RNs, he said."

Protective benefits of Alzheimer's and cancer may lead to new diagnostic treatments

People who have Alzheimer's disease may be less likely to develop cancer, and people who have cancer may be less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study published in the December 23, 2009, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
