Burnout and depression may contribute to major medical errors, says new study

Major medical errors self-reported by American surgeons are strongly related to both burnout and depression. Those findings appear today in the online edition of Annals of Surgery. The Mayo Clinic-led study included collaborators from Johns Hopkins and the American College of Surgeons.

Lysteda tablets to treat menorrhagia approved by the FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Lysteda tablets (tranexamic acid), the first non-hormonal product cleared to treat heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). Lysteda works by stabilizing a protein that helps blood to clot.

Neuromed discusses Exalgo NDA application with the FDA

Covidien today announced that on November 13, 2009, representatives of Neuromed discussed the pending New Drug Application (NDA) for the product candidate ExalgoTM (hydromorphone HCl extended release) tablets with staff from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Mallinckrodt Inc., a Covidien company, obtained the commercial rights to Exalgo in the United States from Neuromed Development Inc., a subsidiary of Neuromed Pharmaceuticals Ltd., in June 2009.

A recent metobolomics study by researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond found that impaired peroxisomal oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) is associated with the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Medicare cuts in cardiovascular services will lead to reduced access to imaging tests, reveals survey

The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (www.asnc.org) released preliminary results from a survey of its membership today, which show that the impending cuts to cardiovascular services outlined in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule will force widespread layoffs, office closures, and limited imaging services. These actions will ultimately lead to reduced access to imaging tests and more expensive care for America's seniors.
