Congress urged to include injury prevention in health care reform

A group of 18 research centers, professional organizations and advocacy groups have joined together to urge Congress to include injury prevention in health care reform. Each day, 475 Americans die from injuries related to motor vehicle crashes, assaults, fires and other trauma. This results in 170,000 deaths every year, more than twice that from diabetes and more than four times that of breast cancer.

PDL BioPharma announces revenue guidance for the third quarter ended September 30, 2009

PDL BioPharma, Inc. (PDL) (Nasdaq: PDLI) today announced revenue guidance for the third quarter ended September 30, 2009 of approximately $71 million, as compared with $69 million for the third quarter of 2008. Royalty revenues are based on second quarter product sales by PDL's licensees and include $1.6 million for Synagis(R), which is marketed by MedImmune.

A new study that was carried out at the University of Haifa has identified another component in the chain of actions that take place in the neurons in the process of forming memories. This discovery joins a line of findings from previous studies that together provide a better understanding of the most complex processes in nature - the process of memory formation and storage in the human brain. The new study has been published in the prestigious Journal of Neuroscience.

School bullying and violence prevention programs

Key to a child's successful education is an environment in which he or she can learn safely. According to a report released today by the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, only 26 percent of parents would give their child's high school an "A" for preventing bullying and school violence, and 38 percent of parents would give their child's elementary or junior high an "A."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a new way to head off potential cases of foodborne illness - the Reportable Food Registry (RFR), where food industry officials must use to alert the FDA quickly, through an electronic portal when they find their products might sicken or kill people or animals. The requirement, a result of legislation, took effect with the launch of the portal.

Three government trusts in Arizona sign contract with Navitus Health Solutions

Navitus Health Solutions, LLC announced today it has signed contracts to provide pharmacy benefits to three government trusts in Arizona. SNM survey evaluates the impact of the worldwide medical isotope shortage

SNM recently conducted a survey of nuclear pharmacies-pharmacies that supply the critical radioisotope Technetium-99m, which is used in more than 16 million nuclear medicine tests each year in the United States-to assess, anecdotally, the impact of the worldwide medical isotope shortage. According to the survey, 60 percent of radiopharmacies have been impacted by the most recent shortage. Technetium-99m is a product of Molybdenum-99, which has been in short supply recently.
