I am a heart attack survivor and a member of a group of women who have had heart attacks. I posted how I was not treated in the ER when I went in with a severe hypertensive emergency, told it was anxiety. and sent out of the ER. I had BPs that were dangerously high 200+/110+ for 3 days straight with no medical care. I posted my story in my heart attack survivors group. There were over 60 Comments under it, because so many women in the group had similar stories about their emergencies. How they were not treated in the ER's or doctor's offices, patients profiled and many told it was in their head, or they have stressed, indigestion, pill seeking?, etc. I have read many stories of this, not just in this one group. The tests that men normally get were not done on these women. I should have been kept for observation. We know that heart disease is the number one killer of women, but more needs to be done. I was talked to like a 3-year-old and told I had "white coat syndrome" even though I was thinking I was safe seeing the doctors, I wasn't anxious when I arrived, I was relieved. The ER doctor told me my home machine was broken even though we calibrated it and it was not. I wanted medical care and the ER was not busy. I asked him to take more readings of me like I had been doing after I had collapsed in the kitchen. He gave me a resounding "NO!" It was not "white coat syndrome" at all. Now I have an excellent female cardiologist thankfully. Not all ER's are bad, but enough women in my group responded to my post that I know I am not alone and that it is a major problem. Please study this, how women are treated in ER's, told they are catastrophizing, pill seeking, anxious, etc. Why are women not treated? Why are women not taught about atypical symptoms of heart attacks in females? ER personnel needs to take it more seriously.I am certain the staff does not want women to leave under these circumstances and that they truly do care. I believe they just do not recognize the signs of what is happening to these female patients. Not everyone has chest pains. Thank you for letting me voice what is happening to many women. At least in my group, I cannot speak for all. I wish there was a study about this specifically, on " patient profiling" - Thank you again for the format.
