    Since this research was about how elite Athletes deal with the pain mainly due to Hydrogen Ions building up in the relevant muscles why was the study not undertaken around some pain stimulus more relevant than pressure on the Thumb -  Practical experience has also shown that the ambient temperature plays a significant part especially as it drops below zero in the Winter Olympic Sports which are about to be held in Vancouver, Canada.
