Whole lot of good this does us in the U.S., where Metacam (meloxicam) has a "black box" warning for cats. Even if studies show it works, our hands are tied for fear of lawsuits. (For those unfamiliar, in 2010 the following warning was added to the label: "WARNING: Repeated use of meloxicam in cats has been associated with acute renal failure and death. Do not administer additional injectable or oral meloxicam to cats." who's still going to prescribe that? not me! At least not without VERY careful informed consent).

  There are numerous sources that give safe doses recommended by the Feline Practitioners. One recommends 1mg/kg day one then 1mg/cat Q3-7days.

    Like I said, with that label being there, it does not matter what a scientific study or the AAFP says. If you prescribe the medication and the cat goes into renal failure, and the owner discovers that you essentially disregarded that warning on the label, a lawsuit might very well be forthcoming (again, unless you had informed consent).

    Also, the doses you stated are dangerously high. Typically, it's 0.2 mg/kg on day one, then 0.1 mg/kg--I have heard for long-term use to do as little as 0.025 mg/kg every 2-3 days.
