    Just how important is the issue of dependence? Many pharmaceuticals cause dependence. For example, beta blockers and other cardiovascular drugs need to be weaned off rather than stopped suddenly to avoid potentially serious rebound effects.

    OTOH, aspirin can be very addictive with some patients unable to quit even in the face of serious medical problems, even death - see Hirschowitz BI, 1998 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9558275 - which shouldn't deter anyone from using aspirin when appropriate. It is a valuable drug that when used wisely can ease suffering and even save lives.
