    Actually, Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa hospital) surgeons have been testing this exact surgery for the past two years, so UCSD is not exactly the first in the U.S. -- not even the first in San Diego.  

    My daughter just had gallbladder surgery at Scripps Mercy hospital and got six abdominal incisions... way too many, I believe.  The surgeon said that the new method, which he hadn't been trained on, took much longer and therefore had a higher risk.  Nonsense.
