    Transitioning provides a temporary lift; the person thinks, "I am trying something to be different, maybe this will help."  Initially it does, in the same way that painkillers help us feel less pain.  But for many, it does not relieve the underlying psychological stress.  The novelty of the new identity gives a temporary boost.
