Targacept commences Phase 2 clinical proof of concept trial of TC-5619 in adults with ADHD

Targacept, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel NNR Therapeutics (TM), today announced that it has initiated a Phase 2 clinical proof of concept trial of TC-5619 in adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). TC-5619 is a novel small molecule that is highly selective for the alpha7 neuronal nicotinic receptor, which Targacept refers to as NNR, and was discovered by Targacept scientists using Targacept's proprietary drug discovery platform known as Pentad (TM).

Exosure to organophosphate pesticides associated with increased risk of ADHD in children

Following closely on the heels of the President's Cancer Panel Report exhorting consumers to choose food grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, and growth hormones to help decrease their exposure to environmental chemicals that can increase their risk of contracting cancer, a study published in today's issue of the journal Pediatrics concludes that exposure to organophosphate pesticides at levels common among U.S. children may contribute to the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in these children.

Intellipharmaceutics announces dismissal of patent litigation settlement on Focalin XR drug

Intellipharmaceutics International Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary Intellipharmaceutics Corp. today announced that it and its licensee and development partner Par Pharmaceutical, Inc. ("Par") have received confirmation that the previously announced stays of the patent litigation concerning a generic version of Novartis' Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder drug, Focalin XR®, (dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride), have expired without regulatory intervention, and that the parties have stipulated to a dismissal of the litigation.

Targacept, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel NNR Therapeutics (TM), today announced an amendment to its 2005 collaboration agreement with AstraZeneca expanding the TC-5619 development program. In addition to the current development of TC-5619 in cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia (CDS), the amended terms provide for parallel development in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and potentially Alzheimer's disease.

Court of Appeals denies McNeil Pediatrics' CONCERTA patent appeal

The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has denied an appeal by McNeil Pediatrics, a division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., to overturn a 2009 decision by the U.S. District Court of Delaware that the patent for CONCERTA (methylphenidate HCl) Extended-Release Tablets CII is invalid and not infringed by Andrx Corporation.

Significant advances in the neonatal intensive care have resulted in increased survival rates of children who are born at less than 26 weeks of gestation, so termed "extremely preterm children".
