Nephropathy is a broad medical term used to denote disease or damage of the kidney, which can eventually result in kidney failure. The primary and most obvious functions of the kidney are to excrete any waste products and to regulate the water and acid-base balance of the body – therefore loss of kidney function is a potentially fatal condition.

Patel trial testimony by anesthetist: bleeding and kidney damage may have led to early death

In the Jayant Patel manslaughter case new testimony has surfaced. Dr. Patel has been accused of causing the deaths of three Queensland patients and permanently injuring another when he performed operations as director of surgery at the Bundaberg Base Hospital between 2003 and 2005. He had pleaded not guilty.

Exposure to dust after WTC collapse impairs ability to detect odors and sense irritants

Individuals involved in rescue, recovery, demolition, and clean-up after the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster on September 11, 2001, were exposed to a complex mixture of airborne smoke, dust, combustion gases, acid mists, and metal fumes. The impact of this exposure on responders' upper and lower respiratory function has been well documented, but little is known about its impact on their sensitivity to odor and irritants.

Data from Phase 2 clinical trials of Hematide/peginesatide presented at NKF Annual Meeting

Affymax, Inc. and Takeda Global Research & Development Center, Inc., U.S., today announced data from several post hoc analyses of Phase 2 clinical trials that evaluated Hematide/peginesatide in dialysis patients with anemia in chronic kidney disease. The data provide hypotheses for further investigation of this agent in anemia management in this patient population.

Study on primary cilia formation may lead to new therapies for ciliopathies

A team of scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have identified a network of genes that initiate and manage cilia formation. Although scientists have known about cilia for decades, only recently have they discovered their role in disease. This new discovery, which may lead to new therapies for ciliopathies, will appear in the April 15 edition of Nature.

Professor Jonathan Craig from the School of Public Health has been honoured for his contribution to the study of kidney disease. The US-based National Kidney Foundation awarded Professor Craig with its 2010 International Distinguished Medal, recognising outstanding accomplishments in the field of nephrology.

BioTrends Research Group, NKF publish Special Report on patients with CKD

BioTrends Research Group, Inc. and the National Kidney Foundation announce the publication of a Special Report: Patient Perspectives in Dialysis and Chronic Kidney Disease. This important new syndicated study provides insights into patients with kidney disease, from the patients themselves. Over 1,100 patients in the U.S. -- both those on dialysis and those with mid-late stage chronic kidney disease -- completed a survey about living with CKD.

Genes influence chronic kidney disease risk: Research

A team of researchers from the United States and Europe has identified more than a dozen genes that may play a role in the etiology of common forms of kidney disease. The team, known as the CKDGen Consortium, examined common variations in DNA sequences in more than 65,000 individuals of European descent. Common variations in several genes were found to be more frequent among people with poor kidney function or chronic kidney disease than in those with normal kidney function.

In all, the School's faculty brought in more than $435 million in research funding from all sources in U-M fiscal year 2009.

Doctors and researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital have developed a new mouse model of vesicoureteral reflux, a common childhood condition that can lead to chronic kidney disease in children.
