Octogenarians have better survival rates following heart valve surgery

Octogenarians need not shy away from heart valve surgery because of their age; however, those sent home following surgery do better than those discharged to care facilities, according to an observational study published in the September 2012 issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

Novartis receives FDA approval for Afinitor Disperz to treat subependymal giant cell astrocytoma

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Afinitor Disperz (everolimus tablets for oral suspension), a new pediatric dosage form of the anti-cancer drug Afinitor (everolimus) used to treat a rare brain tumor called subependymal giant cell astrocytoma.

ALK signs agreement to supply PRE-PEN to HealthTrust member facilities

ALK is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with HealthTrust Purchasing Group, LP to supply PRE-PEN (benzylpenicilloyl polylysine injection USP) the only FDA approved skin test for the diagnosis of penicillin allergy, to HealthTrust member facilities, including 1,400 acute care facilities, 10,600 ambulatory surgery centers, physician practices and alternate care sites.

An ultra-fast, 320-detector computed tomography (CT) scanner can accurately sort out which people with chest pain need - or don't need - an invasive procedure such as cardiac angioplasty or bypass surgery to restore blood flow to the heart, according to an international study. Results of the study, which involved 381 patients at 16 hospitals in eight countries, are scheduled to be presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich, Germany, on August 28.
