In patients who undergo cardiac surgery, severe perioperative bleeding and its treatment are often associated with increases in major cardiac and non-cardiac adverse events and greater mortality. A study from the September issue of Anesthesiology determined certain blood clotting treatment algorithms helped decrease blood transfusion requirements in cardiac surgery patients and were associated with improved outcomes and hospital cost-savings.

A high profile study involving researchers at the University of Limerick's Graduate Entry Medical School has shown that surgical operations in which surgeons-in-training are involved are as safe as operations performed in which trainees have no operative role. The new study addressed earlier studies which raised concerns that the presence of surgeons-in-training may raise the level of risk involved.

ASPS launches campaign to educate women about available breast reconstruction options

A new survey released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows that 89 percent of women want to see what breast reconstruction surgery results would look like before undergoing treatment for breast cancer, prompting the world's largest group of board-certified plastic surgeons to launch a landmark show-and-tell event as part of Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA, October 17, 2012 in New Orleans.

Miniaturized wireless sensors can save lives of wounded soldiers

Early detection of blood loss to save the lives of soldiers wounded on the battlefield is the goal of a three-year research and development project to be launched this fall at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Endovascular brachytherapy may safely and effectively treat femoropopliteal in-stent stenosis

Placement of an endovascular stent has become a common procedure to successfully reopen blocked arteries. Even so, the treated vessel may once again narrow (restenosis), restricting blood flow. In the femoral and popliteal arteries in the leg, the use of nitinol stents magnifies this problem. About 20 to 40 percent of these stent patients experience restenosis 2 years after angioplasty. Now, an improved radiation technique may provide a safe and effective solution.

Bile duct cancer chosen as next indication for PCI Biotech

PCI Biotech (PCIB) the Norwegian biopharmaceutical company, reported today that it has chosen bileduct cancer as the next indication for the use of its PCI (photochemical internalisation) localised cancer therapy. In this indication PCI Biotech’s proprietary photosensitiser Amphinex® will be used in combination with the generic cytotoxic agent gemcitabine. The aim is to start the clinical Proof of Concept study within end of 1H 2013.
