Study reveals ineffectiveness of insulin and metformin against inflammatory biomarkers

In patients with recent onset type-2 diabetes, treatment with insulin or the diabetes drug metformin did not reduce inflammatory biomarkers, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, although the treatment did improve glucose control, according to a study in the September 16 issue of JAMA.

NanoBio presents preclinical data of NB-201 for treating burn wounds at the 2009 ICAAC

NanoBio Corporation today announced compelling preclinical data for NB-201, a nanoemulsion-based topical lotion for the treatment of burn wounds. In preclinical studies, NB-201 dramatically reduced the severity of burn wound infections as well as inflammation following thermal injuries. The research was conducted at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor as a collaborative effort between the University and NanoBio.

Nebulized interferon-gamma helps minimize transmissibility of TB

A new study published in the September 15, 2009, issue of PLoS ONE found that patients with cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis receiving anti-TB medications supplemented with nebulized interferon-gamma have fewer bacilli in the lungs and less inflammation, thereby reducing the transmissibility of tuberculosis in the early phase of treatment.

Aeolus commences second study of AEOL 10150 against Acute Radiation Syndrome

Aeolus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: AOLS) announced today the initiation of a second study, in mice, to determine the optimal length of treatment with AEOL 10150 when used as a countermeasure to Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) in the lungs. This study, led by Zeljko Vujaskovic, M.D. Ph.D. of Duke University, is designed to build on the recently completed study that demonstrated the efficacy of AEOL 10150 as a treatment for damage to the lungs due to exposure to radiation, and determine the most effective duration of delivery for treatment after exposure.

New data confirm link between Epstein-Barr virus and multiple sclerosis

Over the last 40 years, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been repeatedly associated with multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases. During the 2nd European Congress of Immunology ECI 2009 held in Berlin, Francesca Aloisi, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, will present new data that further support the link. In the brain lesions of patients with multiple sclerosis her team found abnormal accumulation of EBV infected B lymphocytes.
