Study examines role of six-layered cerebral cortex in processing sensory information

A series of studies conducted by Randy Bruno, PhD, and Christine Constantinople, PhD, of Columbia University's Department of Neuroscience, topples convention by showing that sensory information travels to two places at once: not only to the brain's mid-layer (where most axons lead), but also directly to its deeper layers. The study appears in the June 28, 2013, edition of the journal Science.

Combination of cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC may reduce mortality in abdominal cancers patients

Researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) have determined that cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CS/HIPEC), a complex procedure to treat advanced abdominal cancers, can be done safely, and may be an effective therapy for select patients. Study results are published in the June issue of Cancer Medicine.

Use of child safety restraint systems decrease mortality rates during motor vehicle crashes

Supplemental child restraints should be used by all children through age 8. When appropriate child safety restraint systems-based on a child's age and weight-are in use during motor vehicle crashes, the rates of mortality and serious injury significantly decrease. Most parents don't know that their older children-ages 4 to 8-should use additional measures to protect them from serious injury or death in case of a crash.

The Food and Drug Administration has granted 510(k) clearance for the Evolution® Biliary Controlled-Release Uncovered Stent from Cook Medical. The biliary stent adds to Cook’s line of Evolution controlled-release stents for the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is the only delivery system that allows the stent to be deployed or recaptured as needed, putting control in the physician’s hands.
