Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson writes of the "breathless Associated Press story" about the uncovering of some corruption in grants given by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the subsequent reaction: "When scandals fit preexisting ideological narratives, they assume a life of their own. This particular narrative - the story of useless, wasted aid - is durable. It is also misleading and might be deadly."

Scientists to commence new DNA vaccine trial for use in patients with leukemia

A new cancer treatment which strengthens a patient's immune system and enables them to fight the disease more effectively is being trialled on patients for the first time in the UK. The treatment will use a new DNA vaccine, developed by scientists from the University of Southampton, which will treat a selected group of volunteers who have either chronic or acute myeloid leukaemia - two forms of bone marrow and blood cancer.

Dr. Charlie Teo had stirred the hornet’s nest of ethical issues by offering to allow a person to spend a day in his company, including the possibility of watching his intricate excision of brain tumors, as a prize in a charity auction held at the Concord Function Centre to raise funds for childhood cancer research. The prize fetched about $1,500.

Faked cancer lands British man in jail

A British father who faked a terminal cancer to his family and friends to ‘con’ them out of cash, is beginning a 20 month jail sentence today. Simon Swift, 39, from Rugby in Warwickshire, central England started by telling his wife and three teenage children that he only had months to live and sold tickets worth hundreds of pounds for a fake charity auction. He claimed in May that the cancer had started in his spine and had become terminal. He even shaved his hair and claimed marks on his neck were from radiotherapy.

Britain’s cancer rates improve while Denmark scores poorly

It appears that warnings regarding dangers of smoking appear to be having an effect with the UK placed in 22nd position in a world league of highest cancer rates. Figures show that for men, 280 cases per 100,000 people, is 33rd in the world, with France the highest. The rate for British women, however, is 260.5 per 100,000 – the world’s 12th highest, with Denmark top. The UK breast cancer rate for women, which is just over 89, ranks 11th.

Guardian online series explores global health worker issues

The Guardian reports, as part of an online feature about health care workforces worldwide done in association with the Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA), that "Africa is desperately short of doctors and nurses. So is much of Asia. In 57 countries, the situation is deemed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be at crisis point ... But in contrast to some other developing world problems, this is an issue that really does affect all of us. The world needs an estimated 4.2 million more health workers."
