Small cell lung cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the lung. Small cell lung cancer is an aggressive (fast-growing) cancer that can spread to other parts of the body. The cancer cells look small and oval-shaped when looked at under a microscope.

Biodesix awarded US patent for VeriStrat serum test

Biodesix, Inc., a company developing and commercializing molecular diagnostics for personalized medicine, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded to the Company patent number 7,736,905. The patent provides coverage for the Company's first product, VeriStrat®, which is used by physicians to help guide therapy for patients with advanced lung cancer. The allowed claims are directed towards the serum-based identification of patients likely to benefit from epidermal growth factor targeted therapy.

OncoGenex initiates Phase 3 Prostate Cancer SATURN Trial

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today the initiation of a Phase 3 registration trial of custirsen sodium (OGX-011/TV-1011), its lead product candidate being developed for the treatment of castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). This trial, referred to as the Prostate Cancer SATURN Trial, is the first of three Phase 3 trials to be initiated under a global collaboration and license agreement between OncoGenex and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries to develop and commercialize OGX-011/ TV-1011.

Exelixis announces regaining of rights to develop and commercialize XL184

Exelixis, Inc. today announced that it has regained full rights to develop and commercialize XL184. Exelixis and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company entered into a global development collaboration for XL184, the clinically most advanced MET inhibitor, in December 2008. Under the agreement, BMS and Exelixis had originally agreed to certain clinical development plans, and Exelixis maintained key rights regarding timing and funding of current and future clinical trials.

Stimuvax clinical program resumed in patients with NSCLC

The treatment and enrollment in these studies will restart after approval by the local regulatory authorities and ethics committees.

Nexavar does not meet primary endpoint in Phase 3 NExUS trial for advanced NSCLC

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the final analysis of the Phase 3 NExUS (NSCLC research Experience Utilizing Sorafenib) trial evaluating Nexavar® (sorafenib) tablets in patients with advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) showed that the study did not meet its primary endpoint of improving overall survival in the first-line setting.

FDA grants orphan drug designation for ICT-107

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan drug designation for ICT-107, the company's dendritic cell-based cancer vaccine candidate which targets glioblastoma multiforme. As a result of the orphan drug status, ImmunoCellular will be eligible to receive a number of benefits, including access to grant funding for clinical trials, tax credits, accelerated FDA approval and allowance for marketing exclusivity after drug approval for a period of up to seven years.

Lytix Biopharma, KAEL-GemVax granted approval for GV1001/LTX-315 combination cancer therapy study

The Norwegian biopharmaceutical company Lytix Biopharma and Korean company KAEL-GemVax today announced approval by the Norwegian Medicines Agency ('Statens Legemiddelverk') to test a combination of LTX-315 and GV1001 as vaccine therapy in patients with resected tumours. Findings from Abraxis BioScience's phase 3 ABRAXANE trial in patients with NSCLC presented at ASCO

Abraxis BioScience, Inc. announced today that findings from their phase 3 randomized trial of nanoparticle albumin bound driven chemotherapy, nab-paclitaxel (ABRAXANE for Injectable Suspension; paclitaxel albumin protein-bound particles for injectable suspension) plus carboplatin, showed a statistically significant 31 percent improvement in overall response rate when compared with Taxol (paclitaxel) injection plus carboplatin in the first-line treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Polaris' ADI-PEG 20 novel anticancer drug inhibits growth of metastatic melanoma cells: Study

Physicians attending the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) presented evidence that pegylated arginine deiminase (ADI-PEG 20), a novel anticancer drug that targets ASS(-) tumors, and which is being developed and manufactured by Polaris Group, was effective in inhibiting the growth of metastatic melanoma cells.

Genta presents tesetaxel dose-ranging trial results at ASCO 2010

Genta Incorporated announced today the presentation of results from two dose-ranging trials of tesetaxel, the Company's novel oral tubulin inhibitor.
