1440 nm wavelength beneficial in laser-assisted lipolysis for fat-disruption and tissue tightening

Cynosure, Inc. today announced the presentation of a new study that demonstrates the clinical benefits of using a 1440 nm wavelength in laser-assisted lipolysis to disrupt fat tissue and tighten skin through tissue coagulation. The study, led by Barry DiBernardo, M.D., Medical Director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery, is one of six Cynosure-related abstracts being presented this week at the 2010 American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) Annual Conference in Arizona.

Celsion announces presentation of long-term follow-up data from Phase I ThermoDox dose escalation trial

Celsion Corporation today announced that Dr. Ronnie T.P. Poon, a principal investigator of the Phase I ThermoDox® dose escalation trial, held a press conference at the University of Hong Kong to provide an update on the long-term follow-up data from patients treated at his center as well as present illustrative patient case studies. The Phase I trial was conducted in 2006.

Cequent Pharmaceuticals commences toxicology study of CEQ508 tkRNAi-based therapeutic candidate

Cequent Pharmaceuticals, a pioneer in the development of novel products to deliver RNAi-based treatments to prevent and treat human disease, has initiated a long-term (26-week) toxicology study of CEQ508 – the company's lead drug candidate based on its proprietary tkRNAi technology. This study is designed to enable a Phase II clinical trial slated for 2011. CEQ508 targets beta-catenin, a key oncogene implicated in the formation of colonic polyps and in the progression of polyps to colorectal cancer.

Embryos with two mums to remove the risk of hereditary diseases: new research

New research published in the journal Nature, could pave the way to world’s first genetically modified human baby. The research involves making embryos with genes from one man and two women. There are hundreds or families around the world who are left childless or have serious ill babies because they carry genes for hereditary illnesses. This research may bring hope to such couples. According to scientists on the team, within the next three years these women will be able to avail such techniques. There has been skepticism regarding ethical issues attached to making of “designer babies”.

LOTS results of Myozyme in older children and adults with Pompe disease published

Genzyme Corp. today announced that the results from its Late-Onset Treatment Study have been published in today's New England Journal of Medicine. The study was undertaken to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Myozyme (alglucosidase alfa) in older children and adults with Pompe disease.

Regulus Therapeutics' metabolic disease program data presented at Diabetes Keystone Symposium

Regulus Therapeutics Inc. today announced that new data from its metabolic disease program were presented at the "Diabetes" Keystone Symposium held April 12-17 in Whistler, British Columbia. The new pre-clinical research findings showed that therapeutic oligonucleotides targeting microRNA are able to improve insulin resistance and normalize plasma glucose in mouse models of diabetes while having no significant effect on glucose or insulin levels in normal mice.

Enrollment completed in Impax Pharmaceuticals' APEX-PD trial of IPX066

Impax Pharmaceuticals, the brand products division of Impax Laboratories, Inc., today announced that it has completed enrollment of its APEX-PD trial. APEX-PD is a multinational Phase III trial of its late-stage drug candidate IPX066 in subjects with early Parkinson's disease.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals announces results from Phase 1b clinical trial of VX-222

In conjunction with an oral presentation at the 45th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver in Vienna, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated today announced results from a Phase 1b clinical trial of the investigational oral hepatitis C virus polymerase inhibitor, VX-222. In the trial, treatment with VX-222 for three days was well-tolerated, with all adverse events being mild to moderate in severity.

Lauric-acid-filled nano-scale bombs for treating acne

A natural product found in both coconut oil and human breast milk - lauric acid -- shines as a possible new acne treatment thanks to a bioengineering graduate student from the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. The student developed a "smart delivery system" - published in the journal ACS Nano in March - capable of delivering lauric-acid-filled nano-scale bombs directly to skin-dwelling bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) that cause common acne.

Early, accurate detection of superficial bladder cancer with Olympus PDD

With Olympus photodynamic diagnosis (PDD), superficial bladder cancer can be detected earlier, easier and more accurately. Bladder cancer is diagnosed by cystoscopy, the endoscopic introduction of a light source through the urethra (transurethral) into the bladder. The imaging technology PDD uses blue light to increase the contrast between tumour tissue (red) and healthy tissue (blue).

AVANIR Pharmaceuticals presents Phase III trial data of Zenvia for PBA at AAN Annual Meeting

AVANIR Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the presentation of detailed data, including safety and tolerability data from the open-label extension as well as cardiac safety data from the double-blind phase of the Phase III confirmatory STAR trial evaluating the investigational drug Zenvia™ (dextromethorphan/quinidine) in the treatment of pseudobulbar affect (PBA). The data were presented in two posters at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada.

Ibuprofen demonstrates efficacy over acetaminophen for treatment of pain and fever

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. today announced results from a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy and safety of ibuprofen and acetaminophen, which was published in the March edition of the peer-reviewed journal The Annals of Pharmacotherapy. The publication notes that in a majority of evaluated studies ibuprofen demonstrated superior efficacy compared to acetaminophen for the treatment of pain and fever, and found no significant safety differences between the drugs.

Interim results from Pharmasset's phase 2a combination study of PSI-7977 with Pegasys and Copegus for HCV

Pharmasset, Inc. announced today interim efficacy and safety results from its ongoing 28-day phase 2a study with PSI-7977 dosed once daily in combination with Pegasys® (peginterferon alfa 2a) and Copegus® (ribavirin) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 who have not been treated previously.
