ATS releases new clinical policy statement on CCHS

The American Thoracic Society has released a new official clinical policy statement on congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), a disorder of respiratory and autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation. The ANS regulates reflexive acts, including heart rate and blood pressure, digestion, body temperature and pain perception.

Immunizing children against seasonal influenza can protect unvaccinated community against influenza

Results of a clinical trial conducted in a largely self-contained religious community during the 2008-09 influenza season show that immunizing children against seasonal influenza can significantly protect unvaccinated community members against influenza as well. The study was conducted to determine if immunized children could act as a barrier to limit the spread of influenza to the wider, unvaccinated community, a concept known as herd immunity.

Flu infection during pregnancy may increase risk of schizophrenia in offspring

Rhesus monkey babies born to mothers who had the flu while pregnant had smaller brains and showed other brain changes similar to those observed in human patients with schizophrenia, a study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has found.

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals' ciprofloxacin DPI granted FDA orphan drug designation for CF treatment

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals announced today that an orphan drug designation has been granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for ciprofloxacin dry powder inhaler for management of pulmonary infection due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis patients. A similar designation has already been granted by the European Medicines Agency.
