Research shows JIA patients have increased risk of cancer

Biologics-na-ve Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis patients may have an increased risk of cancer compared with the general Swedish population, according to research presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy. Results of an additional study, which researched a small cohort of patients showed an increased frequency of cancer in those receiving the biologic etanercept, however, results were deemed not statistically significant by researchers.

HGS, GSK announce full presentation of BLISS-76 Phase 3 BENLYSTA trial results for SLE at EULAR 2010

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK) today announced the full presentation of results from BLISS-76, one of two pivotal Phase 3 trials of BENLYSTA® (belimumab) in seropositive patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The results will be presented today in Rome at the 2010 Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR).

New study shows 72% of women with RA suffer pain daily

Almost three quarters (72%) of women with Rheumatoid Arthritis suffer pain daily, despite the fact that three quarters (75%) receive pain relief medication, according to a new study presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy. Furthermore the physical pain appears to affect women to such an extent that it impacts negatively on emotional and social aspects of their lives.

Phase 3 U.S. registration study of LODOTRA shows improvement in patients with RA

Phase IIb EMBLEM study demonstrates clinical efficacy of epratuzumab in patients with SLE

UCB and Immunomedics Inc. announced new lupus drug candidate, epratuzumab, provided a significant reduction in disease activity in patients with moderate to severe active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Data presented at the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) meeting in Rome from the phase IIb study, EMBLEM™, showed the clinical efficacy of epratuzumab in patients with SLE.

Trubion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced Pfizer's decision to discontinue development of TRU-015 (PF-05212374), an investigational drug in Phase 2 evaluation for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) developed under the companies' CD20 collaboration. However, Pfizer has confirmed that it will continue to develop SBI-087 (PF-05230895), Trubion's next-generation, humanized, subcutaneous CD20 RA product candidate also in Phase 2 clinical evaluation.

2010 GAPS sheds light on the painful reality of what life is like for gout patients

The 2010 Gout Attitudes Patient Survey, a new study of Americans with gout, released by Men's Health Network, sheds light on the painful reality of what life is like for the approximately five million Americans who live with this condition. Of those surveyed, 69 percent described the pain of a gout attack as "miserable," yet a quarter of gout patients feel that those without gout perceive them as overreacting to attacks, and 67 percent feel as though others do not take the condition seriously.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that a Phase 3 study in gout patients initiating allopurinol therapy to lower their uric acid levels showed that ARCALYST (rilonacept), also known as IL-1 Trap, prevented gout attacks, as measured by the primary endpoint of the number of gout flares per patient over the 16 week treatment period.

Mayo Clinic research reveals increase in incidence of rheumatoid arthritis in women

The incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in women has risen during the period of 1995 to 2007, according to a newly published study by researchers from the Mayo Clinic. This rise in RA follows a 4-decade period of decline and study authors speculate environmental factors such as cigarette smoking, vitamin D deficiency, and lower dose synthetic estrogens in oral contraceptives may be the source of the increase.

Drug and dosage influence risk of GI bleeding

A study conducted at the Spanish Centre for Pharmacoepidemiological Research revealed that the risk of gastrointestinal complications due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use varies by specific NSAID administered and by dosage. The study further determined that NSAIDs with a long half-life or slow-release formulation are associated with a greater risk of GI bleeding or perforation.

Study finds disagreement between RA patients and doctors on assessment of disease severity

A novel study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco found that nearly one-third of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients differed from their physicians in assessment of their disease severity. The disagreement between patient and doctor evaluation of RA activity was most prevalent in patients with depressive symptoms, and those who had poor overall function.
