Parental support programmes could promote healthy eating behaviours in obese children

Parental support programmes in areas with the greatest needs can have a positive effect on the consumption of unhealthy food and drink and on weight increases in obese children. This according to a randomised study conducted by Karolinska Institutet and the Stockholm County Council, Sweden, published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity.

Reducing sugar in sweetened drinks could prevent 300,000 diabetes cases

A new study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal suggests that reducing sugar content in sugar sweetened drinks (including fruit juices) in the UK by 40% over five years, without replacing them with any artificial sweeteners, could prevent 500,000 cases of overweight and 1 million cases of obesity, in turn preventing around 300,000 cases of type 2 diabetes, over two decades.

Sugar tax cuts sugary drinks sales by 12% in Mexico

A 10% tax on sugar-sweetened drinks in Mexico has been associated with a 12% cut in sales just one year after its implementation, according to a study published in The BMJ. The sugar tax was also associated with a 4% increase in the purchase of untaxed beverages.

60 million people worldwide are living with diabetes mellitus, and one in ten people over the age of 25 will develop the condition (type 2) at some stage in their lives. Globally, around 3.4 million people die from diabetes and its consequences every year. "Every six seconds, somebody somewhere in the world dies from diabetes", says Alexandra Kautzky-Willer from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the MedUni Vienna's University Department of Internal Medicine III.

Study show that putting tax on sugary drinks could help reduce prevalence of obesity in the UK

In today's report, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition says no more than five per cent of daily calories should come from added sugar - about seven level teaspoons. The British Medical Association has called a 20 per cent tax on sugar because, according to its figures, poor diets are causing around 70,000 premature deaths each year.

Soft drink consumers exposed to unnecessary cancer risk

Public health researchers have analyzed soda consumption data in order to characterize people's exposure to a potentially carcinogenic byproduct of some types of caramel color. Caramel color is a common ingredient in colas and other dark soft drinks. The results show that between 44 and 58 percent of people over the age of six typically have at least one can of soda per day, possibly more, potentially exposing them to 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI), a possible human carcinogen formed during the manufacture of some kinds of caramel color.

Energy drinks increase frequency of insomnia, nervousness in athletes

A study analysing the positive and negative effects of energy drinks on athletes has seen that, although in principle their sports performance was seen to improve by between 3% and 7%, there was also an increase in the frequency of insomnia, nervousness and the level of stimulation in the hours following competition.
