Exactech receives FDA marketing clearance for Equinoxe Platform Fracture Stem

Exactech, Inc., a developer and producer of bone and joint restoration products for hip, knee, shoulder, spine and biologic materials, announced today that the company has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the company’s Equinoxe® Platform Fracture Stem, the latest addition to the company’s shoulder arthroplasty line.

OrthoDynamix' ArthroSteer 3.5mm Ablator for general surgical use receives FDA clearance

OrthoDynamix announced today that it has received FDA clearance for its new device, ArthroSteer 3.5mm Ablator, a mono polar electrosurgical device, for general surgical use, including the orthopedic and arthroscopic applications for resection, ablation, excision of soft tissue, hemostasis of blood vessels, and coagulating soft tissue in, but not limited to the knee, shoulder, and primarily the hip.

Study shows high rate of shoulder dislocation in young males and elderly women

An article published in the March 2010 issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery reveals that the majority of all shoulder dislocations occur during sports activities and young males are at a higher risk. The study also shows a high rate of shoulder dislocation in elderly women.

Outpatient referrals from primary care physicians for CT, MRI studies inappropriate: Academic medical center

A large academic medical center has found that a significant percentage of outpatient referrals they receive from primary care physicians for computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies are inappropriate (based upon evidence-based appropriateness criteria developed by a radiology benefits management company), according to a study in the March issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology (www.jacr.org).

Dabigatran as effective as warfarin in preventing subsequent strokes among atrial fibrillation patients

The drug dabigatran was as effective as the currently recommended drug – warfarin – in preventing a subsequent stroke among people with atrial fibrillation and prior stroke or transient ischemic attack – and it did so with less bleeding according to late-breaking science presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2010.

The HealthGrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2010 were identified in a report issued today by the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. The analysis, which examined objective patient outcomes over three years at all 5,000 of the nation’s nonfederal hospitals, found that the 50 Best Hospitals had mortality rates that were, on average, 27% lower than other hospitals.

Now, a University of Utah study shows the advantage: Compared with heel-first walking, it takes 53 percent more energy to walk on the balls of your feet, and 83 percent more energy to walk on your toes.
