Acculis' new device for destroying unwanted tissues receives European CE Mark clearance

Acculis Limited today announced the regulatory clearance of its revolutionary new device for destroying unwanted tissues, such as liver tumours. The clearance under the European CE Mark system allows the company to begin deliveries for treating patients throughout Europe and elsewhere where the CE Mark system is recognised. The device is a single high power high frequency 2.45GHz microwave needle that burns a 5cm sphere of tissue in just 5 minutes which is between 3 to 10 times faster than old school radiofrequency based systems or lower frequency 915MHz microwave systems.

Dabigatran as effective as warfarin in preventing subsequent strokes among atrial fibrillation patients

The drug dabigatran was as effective as the currently recommended drug – warfarin – in preventing a subsequent stroke among people with atrial fibrillation and prior stroke or transient ischemic attack – and it did so with less bleeding according to late-breaking science presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2010.

Paralysis from a stroke: Rare nerve transfer improves mobility

The Plastic Surgery Center today announced the successful results of a rare nerve transfer performed for the first known time on a stroke patient to reverse paralysis. Following the procedure, which was led by Dr. Andrew Elkwood, M.D., 47-year old Vincent Filipini is now able to lift, move and bend his once paralyzed arm. Mr. Filipini continues to show improvement in his mobility.

Surgeons at UC San Diego Medical Center have performed the nation's first incision-free myotomy, a procedure to treat achalasia, a distressing disorder which causes difficulty swallowing, regurgitation and chest pain.
