Angioedema is the rapid swelling (edema) of the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, mucosa and submucosal tissues. It is very similar to urticaria, but urticaria, commonly known as hives, occurs in the upper dermis.

European Commission grants Orphan Drug Designation for CSL Behring's rVIIa-FP to treat hemophilia

CSL Behring announced today that it has been granted Orphan Drug Designations by the European Commission for the development of its recombinant fusion protein linking coagulation factor VIIa with albumin (rVIIa-FP), a novel therapy to treat hemophilia A and hemophilia B patients with inhibitors.

Defiante, Dyax expand KALBITOR partnership to treat hereditary angioedema

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced results from a Phase 2b trial evaluating Nexavar® (sorafenib) tablets in patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer previously treated with a bevacizumab-containing regimen, which showed that Nexavar was associated with statistically significant improvements in progression-free survival and time-to-progression.

Positive results from Onyx's carfilzomib Phase 2b 003-A1 study in relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma

Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced updated results from the Phase 2b 003-A1 study of single-agent carfilzomib, a next generation proteasome inhibitor, in patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. Carfilzomib achieved a clinical benefit rate (CBR) (minimal response or greater) in the study population of 37 percent with a duration of response (DOR) of 8.3 months.

Positive results from Astellas Pharma's mirabegron phase III trial in overactive bladder

Astellas Pharma US, Inc., U.S. subsidiary of Astellas Pharma Inc., today announced the results of a pivotal phase III clinical trial for mirabegron, the first of a new class of compounds under development for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB), which show mirabegron significantly improves key OAB symptoms – urinary incontinence and frequency of micturition compared with placebo.

Journal of Rheumatology publishes positive results from Cimzia Phase III trial in RA

UCB announced today results from a post hoc analysis of the RAPID 1 study published in the Journal of Rheumatology. The results suggest moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with Cimzia, the only approved PEGylated anti-TNF, together with methotrexate, achieved a rapid response associated with improved long-term outcomes one year after treatment began.

Shire announces FDA PDUFA date for FIRAZYR NDA in treatment of acute attacks of hereditary angioedema

Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, today announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has assigned a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date of August 25, 2011 for the review of the New Drug Application (NDA) for FIRAZYR(R) (icatibant) for the treatment of acute attacks (Types I and II) of hereditary angioedema (HAE). This 6 month review timeline is consistent with review as a Class II resubmission.
