UCLA plans nanotechnology collaboration with Hamamatsu Photonics

The California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA has announced plans to collaborate with Hamamatsu Photonics Corp., a leading developer and manufacturer of photon detectors and camera systems, to apply nanoscience and nanotechnology to projects having global importance in health, medicine, energy and the environment.

International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory orders for Vistec's EBPG5200 electron-beam lithography system

Vistec Lithography, a leading supplier of advanced electron-beam lithography systems has announced today that the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Braga, Portugal has placed an order for Vistec's electron-beam lithography system EBPG5200. The Portuguese Laboratory is the first fully international research organization in Europe in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Kavli Day 2010 at Norwegian University of Science and Technology

In celebration of Kavli Prize Week, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and the Kavli Foundation will hold a series of lectures and events on 9 September 2010 in Trondheim, Norway at the NTNU campus. The event features a number of 2010 Kavli Prize Laureates. The festivities continue after the official celebration, with two symposia sponsored by NTNU, one in neuroscience and one in nanoscience.

New diagnostic tool may help detect HPV and other viruses

A cluster of carbon nanotubes coated with a thin layer of protein-recognizing polymer form a biosensor capable of using electrochemical signals to detect minute amounts of proteins, which could provide a crucial new diagnostic tool for the detection of a range of illnesses, a team of Boston College researchers report in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Some therapies being investigated for Alzheimer's disease may cause cell death: UCSD

Some current therapies being investigated for Alzheimer's disease may cause further neural degeneration and cell death, according to a breakthrough discovery by UC San Diego researchers. By combining three dimensional computer simulations with high resolution atomic force microscopy membrane protein and cell imaging, electrical recording and various cellular assays, UCSD nano-biophysicist Ratnesh Lal and his colleagues investigated the structure and function of truncated peptides, known as nonamyloidgenic peptides, formed by some Alzheimer's drug candidates.

China’s first open access journal Nano Research listed in Science Citation Index

Thomson ISI has announced that Nano Research, an English-language journal jointly published by Springer and Tsinghua University Press, is now listed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E). The academic journal, founded in July 2008, has been covered in the index from Volume 1, Issue 1. Nano Research is part of Springer’s Chinese Library of Science, a collection comprising more than 90 journals.

Silicon to transport drugs in the human body: a novel drug delivery method under development

Several Finnish universities have joined forces to develop an innovative drug delivery method that utilises silicon to transport drugs in the human body. Among other advances, the project has been able to sustain the effect of peptides controlling appetite, which may facilitate the use of nanotechnology for dieting purposes.
